The Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine organises its work in several different areas in order to ensure comprehensive patient care.

The Clinic for Anaesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine performs over 17,500 operations a year for all surgical departments of the St. Franziskus Hospital. The full spectrum of modern anaesthetic procedures are used. The area of focus of the clinic is regional anaesthesia, in particular peridural conduction anaesthesia.

Anaesthesiology consultations

Before any intervention a detailed investigation is performed to avoid possible complications. The different anaesthesia methods are discussed together with the patient in an anaesthesiology consultation. The consultation rooms are located on the ground floor (at the main entrance, turn right through the hall in the direction of the elevators; opposite the Post Office).

Opening times:
Mon-Thu     9.00 to 17.00
Fri               8.00 to 16.00
Tel: +49 (0) 2 51 / 935 - 39 75

Consultations for private patients are held Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 12.00 and by appointment with the Secretary's Office of Professor Möllmann (1st Floor, Room 422).

Geriatric Project

Whether they have come in for an emergency or planned operation, a stay in hospital is often an upsetting experience, particularly for older people. A team of geriatric nurses is on hand to provide care where needed for individuals who may be anxious and confused. They accompany the patient from the ward to the operating theatre and also remain with conscious patients (e.g. in regional anaesthetic procedures) during the operation. They look after "their" patients up to and including the recovery room and return to the ward.

This approach makes it possible to reduce many of the anxieties felt in such a strange and confusing environment and ensures that the patient has a familiar face during the entire operation.

Professor Möllmann's team was awarded the Award for the Care of Elderly People with Psychological Conditions (FOPPAM Award) of the German Society for Gerontopsychiatry.

Intensive Care Therapy / Ward 22
Some patients have to be treated on our modern and recently established Intensive Care Ward.

Pain Therapy
The Department of Pain Therapy (Lead Physician: Dr. Roesner) organises the relevant processes to ensure seamless pain therapy before and after the operation.

Autologous blood donation
Subject to certain health preconditions, patients are able to donate blood before major operations. This blood is processed and given back to the patient either during or after the operation.

Professional development
There are regular seminars, lectures and training covering the entire area of anaesthesiology, intensive care therapy, pain therapy, transfusion medicine and accident and emergency medicine. Of particular importance are the "Peripheral and Central Nerve Block" regional anaesthesia workshops that take place several times a year. These established events are offered in collaboration with the Institute of Anatomy (WWU) and are very popular throughout the region.
Professor Möllmann's team has particular expertise in modern, efficient operation management, which they are happy to explain in numerous lectures and presentations. The "Integrated Operation Management for Resource Use Optimisation through Coordination" project received the RFH-OP Management Award of Cologne Technical University in November 2006.

For further information on professional development events and forthcoming dates, please contact the Clinic Secretary's Office (see above).

There has been an established exchange of resident physicians for many years in annual rotation with other hospitals (Hornheide Speciality Hospital in Münster and the  Schüchtermann Cardiac Centre Clinic in Bad Rothenfelde - erfolgt in jährlichen Rotationsverfahren.

Accident and emergency medicine
During the day the Clinic is responsible for manning the ambulance of the town of Telgte and takes part in the On Call Service for Lead Emergency Physicians for the district of Warendorf. In addition, the intensive care ambulance of the Münster Workers' Samaritan Federation is also manned by doctors from the Anaesthesiology Clinic of the St. Franziskus Hospital. (www.itw-muenster.de)

The St. Franziskus Hospital has a helicopter landing pad.
