Welcome
The Clinic for General, Visceral and Paediatric Surgery at the St. Franziskus Hospital, Münster has been led since 1 January 2007 by Dr. Gerhard Stöhr who took over this position from his predecessor Dr. U. Schulz after 27 years of successful service.
The Surgical Clinic has 50 beds, including beds on the interdisciplinary Intensive Care Ward. Over 1800 surgical interventions are performed here each year.
If not already done by the patient's general practitioner, the most important diagnostic measures are performed here and individual treatment approaches are discussed with patients and their relatives in the Surgical Out-Patient Clinic or in the interdisciplinary Accident and Emergency Department .
A wide spectrum of state-of-the art investigative procedures are available in close interdisciplinary collaboration with the medical clinics and radiological units to ensure comprehensive pre-operative diagnosis both for out-patient and in-patient use (e.g. colon and stomach imaging, computer tomography, conventional X-rays, MRI, nuclear medicine diagnostic procedures, endosonography, ultrasound and diagnostic punctures).
Visceral surgical interventions form a significant part of the treatment spectrum, i.e. operations for benign and malignant conditions in all organs of the digestive tract and abdominal region.
Whenever possible we recommend procedures that are as minimally invasive as possible (keyhole surgery). Other areas of focus of the Surgical Clinic include endocrine surgery (treatment of the glands), treatment of inguinal and abdominal hernias, treatment of chronic inflammatory intestinal conditions, intensive care medicine relating to specific areas and paediatric surgery in cooperation with paediatric surgeon Dr. Jean Tsokas and the Neonatology and Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine clinics.
