Paediatric orthopaedic medicine deals with hereditary and acquired diseases of the postural and musculoskeletal system from birth to the end of the 18th year. Neuroorthopaedics focuses on changes to the postural and musculoskeletal system caused by malfunctions of the central nervous system.
Adults and children from a wide catchment area are seen here in special consultations. Operations are performed on all major peripheral limbs and joints. Particular areas of surgical focus are torticollis (wry neck) operations, hip operations (e.g. hip dysplasia), knee operations and foot operations (Ponseti club foot therapy). The department also performs soft tissue operations for muscle and tendon lengthening and muscle transposition.
In addition to prevention (e.g. hip sonography), post-operative mobilisation plays an important role, particularly in neuro-orthopaedic patients.
